Hi – Will the E71 run on th e3G network in the USA? Or like my E65 – only on 3g in Europe and Asia?

  2. 2 Dexter July 21, 2008 at 7:56 am

    Hi John,

If I’m getting your question right, it depends on radio’ variant of the device you have.

In Europe it’s E71-1 which supports 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) connectivity for 900 and 2100 MHz networks. Of course European device will work as 2G device in the States because it supports quad-GSM bands.

If you need 3G support in the States you’d need buy US variant. I think it’s E71-2. Here you have a part of E71 specs telling about supported frequencies:

    E71-1 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100 HSDPA
    E71-2 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900 HSDPA
    E71-3 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/2100 HSDPA

    best regards,
    Dexter

I LOVE my E71, after having numerous Treos and HTC WM devices it is the best phone/PDA I’ve had.

What is the best add-on media player for the E71? I often listen to long podcasts and need the capability to bookmark a podcast to come back to later. I can’t find any software that allows that.

    Keep up the fantastic blog.

Hey Dexter, great site. New user here but have been browsing your site for a while. Finally got the E71-2 and pretty pleased with it. I just have a question with your unit or anyone else’s. Does your keypad sort of ‘bounce’ or have some flex to it near the middle of the phone? I only ask because where I live their is no seller that has this phone and this ‘flex’ is driving me nuts. I don’t know if its just my unit or if its like that with all of them.

    Thanks for your help!

    Ben

  7. 8 Dexter September 22, 2008 at 2:22 pm

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for warm words about my blog. Actually I really enjoy using E71′ keyboard. My works fine, keys are working the same way no matter where they are located (in the middle, or on the edge).

I have read some complains about phones having dust under screen quickly after purchase. Maybe yours also have some problems which you should point to the seller or Nokia Care point?

    best regards,

    Hi Dexter,

Great site! I have just recieved my E71 and would like to upload some new themes to it. Can you point me in the right direction?
This is the first PDA style phone that I have had, all of my previous phones have been your usual Samsung efforts so quite a leap forward in technology for me!
Also, any good programs or software that I should download for it?

    Thanks,

    Rossco

  9. 10 Dexter September 25, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    Hi Rossco,

I’m glad you enjoy my blog. If E71 is your first smartphone and you’re newbie with Symbian S60 surely you will fing reviews of few interesting applications in here. Try some IMs, like Fring or Palringo. If you will check older posts, there are links to pages with themes as well,

Enjoy my page and your E71,
    Dexter

    Hello,
    1 question regarding the E71:

    – if I’m buying the E71-2 in the US, will I be able to use the full capacity of the phone in Europe, particularly the 3G connectivity?

I’m worried that I won’t be able to connect to 3G here in Europe.

    thanks for your expertise
    seb

Have you seen on Youtube how rayanmx has installed the n-gage gaming application onto a Nokia E-71:

If you could look into how this is done and write up the procedure to your blog, it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks and kind regards,
    Peter

  16. 17 Dexter November 21, 2008 at 10:25 am

    sebadub,

I’m affraind that 3G networks in the US and European ones uses different frequencies. As I can see in the specifications it won’t offer you 3G in UMTS (2100 MHz) European networks.

  17. 18 Dexter November 21, 2008 at 10:26 am

    kcm,

Surely WIFI will work without any problems all over the world.

    Hi Dexter,

Following your answer in forum i am a bit confused what is the right phone modification for me?
I know that in Israel 3G works with 2100Mhz , but what about the other fiure 900 or 850?
So basically my question is wich one to choose e71-1 or e71-2

  20. 21 Axel Winter December 16, 2008 at 3:34 am

You know, I really really like the Nokia E71. Lot’s of cool functions, slick design, etc.

But the usability of the thing is really very very bad. Its not even close to the iPhone, even the Black Berry and Windows Mobile devices have far better usability.

Now some of the following functions may work, but – without checking google/hand book – I could not figure out how to do it (unlike in the beforehand mentioned devices):

    SMS Inbox:
    – Does not always recog the phone number and hence shows numbers instead of the name.
    – SMS are not displayed in “conversation mode” (similar to MSN or Skype Chat logfile) but just a long list of entries – really confusing

    Calendar:
-Delete all entries, deleted all my calendar entires on the devices. No warnings, etc. The function should not even exist (other then in the Sync’ sw or so)
-I could not invite people for calendar items

    Email:
-Exchange does not show sub folders under inbox
-IMAP Exchange is very very slow. It shows new emails actually fast, but then the UPDATE Server Window is open for 5 minutes and then on top of it, it wants to load an email if I click on it. In that 5 Minutes it should have loaded the headers (the usual 2-3kb of text) or offer this as an option.

    COUNTRY SETTINGS
    – As per Nokia: Its IMPOSSIBLE to implement any localization. I wanted to install Thai and German Fonts, so that I can read SMS/Emails/WebPages from both countries – No can do. You MUST go to the services center in that country. WHAT THE F***

Sorry I am not against it, I really love the phone. But if Nokia wants to play in this segment it has to do a lot of things on their software.

PLEASE ALL JOIN TO FILE COMPLAINTS TO NOKIA IN THIS REGARD! They must be better with the S60

    Cheers!

    Hi Dexter,

Just bought the E71 last week and really like the phone. Could you advise if there are software that can increase the font size (larger than the large size). 🙂

  22. 24 Michael December 30, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    Greetings Dexter,

Topic: A seamless call to the end user, using callback with the Nokia E71.

I have done quite a few searches online, and I cannot seem to find any information on it. I have searched the forums too and cannot really find what I am looking for.

Is there any application that is out there that works with setting up either a callback or calling card through separate settings within an e71 platform.

What I would like to see if, that when calling a number, using the address book a small pull down would come up to either “call normal” or through the callback/callthru app. The app would have the callthru number, pin, then dial the number. Callback would call out to the callback and then call the phone back, then dial the number. The end user would not have to do anything else. A seamless call to the end user using callback!

If you could point me in the right direction, or send a url to the right app, or an example in Symbian C++.

    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

Been using E71 for about a month now. Best phone I ever had.
Palm treo was nothing but trouble for 6 years.
Everything is great but lately the player has hickups, as I loose
the sound for certain time, then all of a sudden it comes back.
Do you think it is a software problem?

    hey Dexter,
could you please guide me in following queries about this phone.
actually i am a traveler and have to roam around the countries. hence i want a phone where in i do not have to be tied up with any cell phone service provider and can just use prepaid phones in different countries.

therefore i am looking for a phone with GPS ( so that i can find my way around new places without the help of the network of any service provider) i.e can the GPS in this phone function as a normal Garmin GPS?

Secondly i want a phone to use internet (prepaid connection) without relying on service providers. can i use the Wi-FI on this phone anywhere i go? i mean is the wifi usable like that of a laptop?

please guide me in this ASAP
    thanks

Greetings Dexter! Really enjoy reading your site and it helped me make the decision to get the e71.

I have an unlocked e71 that I am using on the AT&T network. Up until recently it has worked flawlessly. It now has a very recent problem of not being able to send SMS text messages. I can receive txt msgs but I cannot send them.

When I try to “re-send” the txt from the OutBox I get the alert box, “unable to send message”. When I press the “details” key I get the alert box “General: Memory full. Close some applications and try again.”

My phone has nothing saved to it (photos, files, music, etc.) and I do not have any applications running in the background.

I have reset the device to factory settings, twice. Spent an hour on the phone with two different AT&T tech support personal.

Tried the Nokia.USA web site tech support forum but their only suggestion was to update the firmware. I would have done this straight away as part of the troubleshooting but I am on a non-intel based MAC platform which does not seem to allow the two devices to synch or talk.

I LOVE this phone! It has worked great for three months and I cannot back track any event or change that would have caused the texting, which was working fine, to all of a sudden stop working.

Thanks in advance for your help.

oh my Goodness, I have a same problem with Ditchdog and dont know how to solve it now. Pls help me.

    Thank you very much

    • 41 DitchDog August 16, 2009 at 11:20 pm

      Greetings Mytran:

I solved my txt problems by doing an actual “Hard Reset” of my e71.

The e71 user manual references a procedure to return the phone to Factory Settings. This really does not, however, wipe the phone of all data and return it to “out-of-box” clean like a true system re-set should.

Just to share the troubleshooting sequence I did first have a new SIM card installed in the phone because AT&T claimed that this provides the fix 90% of the time.

When that failed a support tech at the store found a code online that accomplished a true system re-set of the device.

Be advised, this procedure will wipe all data, photos, apps and contacts from your e71. We first backed-up my address book to my old BlackJack via their in house gizmo box. Next, set your phone to “Off-Line” mode under Profiles. Then type in this code *#7370#.

Restart your phone and you should find the texting works again. Mine has worked flawlessly since the re-set. I copied the address book back to the e71 but I have not loaded all of the apps back on the phone. Only went with a few favorites I can’t live without for fear that one of them caused this problem.

Hope this works for you. Best of luck.

This worked out. Thank u v much. But ppl do remember to take back up first and then follow the procedure. I will advice to remove the memory card before taking back up. With memory card it will take more time. thats it, no other issues!

  39. 43 Deborah Wall August 7, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Dexter, I’ve had the E71 for less than 6 months. It developed a crackling noise when inputting calendar INFO and Nokia has declared it beyond repair due to “corrosion”. I have seen postings elsewhere that Nokia does this. Often. I really liked the phone. Any suggestions? It have never been wet or even in a damp environment. I believe that it is a manufacturer defect and now Nokia says Amazon (where I bought it) is responsible for the warranty! If you have heard of this or have a repair idea, please let me know. Thanks.

Here are 10 things I like about this phone; 1- Solid metal construction, slimmer then average block phone out there.it feels good in your hand. 2- Responsive keys 3- Good camera and video capabilities 4- Can take large memory cards and you do not have to remove the battery to access the card. 5- Wifi rocks,It remembers the locations you have been to and switches accordingly. 6- I downloaded Program called Fring and now I am able to call all my frinds on skype at any hotspot as well as regular phone numbers ( with a minimal fee from Skype). 7- Dedicated function keys ( efficent) 8- Video call capabilities. 9- Great office programs ( spreadsheet, word processor as well as a slide presentation capabilities) 10- Able to create folders and move files as i want .

DitchDog answered this further up the page. 🙂

press down and hold the menu button/just hold the menu button and it’ll tell you if they’re all actually closed, press c to exit any unnecessary programs.
or (this will completely wipe your phone) save everything to your computer/somewhere else, set your phone to offline and then type in *#7370#

Great blog Dexter, this is one of the most informative sites out there for the e71.. I am planning on buying one soon but since I am a smartphone newbie and technologically behind by light-years ( i am still using a motorola razr–yikes) I am a bit confused by some of the specs.. If I want to use this phones features to the fullest, and want to be able to use it in Europe during the summer, is there a specific model I should be looking for (ie the US variant of this phone etc).. I see you’ve outlined the 3 different frequencies, just wondering which one is best for me,

thanks again for this great site
