Nokia E72 officially announced – E72 vs. E71

Nokia E72Late last year there were some rumors and videos about possible successor of E71, which would be named with the following number – E72. Today this phone has been officially announced. What brings next E series smartphone? Here is a basic comparison against its older brother E71.

Size and mass? E72 is almost the same size as E71, only 2.5 mm wider and 0.1 mm thicker. Additionally E72 is one gram heavier (128g).
Memory? Bigger internal memory (250MB instead of 110 MB), plus support of 16GB memory cards – E71 supports officially cards up to 8 GB.
Connectivity? HSDPA has been accelerated up to 10.2 Mbps instead of 3.6 Mbps, plus HSUPA support (2Mbps)
Photo features? Better camera, 5 Mpix instead of 3.2 Mpix
Battery performance? While E72 has the same battery (1500 mAh) its estimated standby time increased from 408 to 492 hrs in GSM mode, and 12 hrs 30 min instead of 10 hrs 30 minutes of talk time.
Audio? Standard 3,5 mm mini-jack instead of 2 mm one.

Anything new? Of course E71 runs on Symbian S60 3.2, like E71x, which is different from S60 3.1 installed on E71. Official description tells us about FM radio with RDS support, which was missing in E71, nevertheless it was not clear in case of this phone. Anything missing? I regret it doesn’t have FM transmitter, which I find very useful in N97. New phone will be available in three colors: – Zodium black, Metal grey & Topaz brown and should be released in 3Q of 2009. You can find official Nokia E72 specification in here. What’s your opinion?

I just hope that the camera really is better. Megapixels tell nothing.

A digital compass? Haven’t heard about any accelerometer features though.

i just bought the E71x and im having a hard finding an adapter for the 2.5 audio jack that works. And now, a few weeks after i bought it, a new E72 with a standard audio jack and lots of other cool feat. is coming out?!

well tough luck for me…the phone looks awesome

    TORTURE IT!

The shortcut keys look to be the metal plated type used in N78, and if so that’s actually a bad thing. I like keys with real tactile feedback; these are flat with little feedback.

Evolutionary, not at all revolutionary, I think.

Nokia continues to excel at producing new hardware, while underwhelming in the area of software innovation. Symbian S60 3.2? Yeah, great. Too bad the E71 cannot undergo a firmware update, to get that. Then again, where would Nokia be able to chalk up sales of the E72, if not in large part from current holders of the E71?

Does the E72 still use Nokia PC Suite? Yes. Does it yet sync categories to PC or Mac apps? No.

Honestly, nobody who has used Pimlico Software’s DateBk, on the Palm OS, or PocketInformant, on WinMo, would mistake what’s available on a Nokia as being truly innovative PIM software.

The Nokia E71 – and presumably the E72 – is a really good phone. It could be a great smartphone, if Nokia would get to work on the aging core OS. But then, Nokia won’t do that, so long as its fanbase goes for the latest shiny widget. Kinda like fins and chrome on the otherwise gas-guzzling American car (“GM, your bankruptcy is calling.”).

    Some mistakes:
Anything new? Of course E71 runs on Symbian S60 3.2,
    you think E72?

Audio? Standard 3,5 mm mini-jack instead of 2 mm one.
    E71 has 2.5mm one.

The E71 can hold up to 32 GB cards, which is the microSD-HC maximum. I’d assume the E72 can hold up to 32 GB as well.

Smaller space bar. Has flashlight function like E63!

I think we deserve a firmware update to symbian 3.2 or a 50% discount on E72 because of the well known date bug, still unsolved since months.

PS: Have the E71x the same bug?

Also new in the E72 is the Optical Navi Key and Micro-USB connector which supports charging

Hi, does Nokia E71 really have only 3.6 Mbps in HDSPA? damn my Provider supports 7,2…

I like some of the features in E72 – noise cancellation works great, faster cpu, 3.5mm headphone jack, but I find E71 has more pluses too, keyboard is better, more solidly feel, less bug, things just works.

I am looking for a good phone for chatting, internet browsing and also I like to take pictures in my daily life. Before I was comparing Blackberry Curve 8520 and Nokia E71. I knew the difference of specification between E71 & E72. But more higher price of E72 is out of my budget. However next 2,3 days I’ll make my final decession among E71 / E72. Surely I’ll not go for a Blackberry.

In case you go for the E71, make sure you test the camera, most models have a faulty camera that adds a purple hue on images!

Don´t update to E72! I just recently bought one and it was a great disapointment. Huge problems with Bluetooth connection with my Plantronics headset. According to Nokia, this is due to that there are dufferent BT stacks in E72 compared to E71 and as a consumer this should be my task to find out before I buy anything! In addition, same lousy camera as previsously and no really new under the hood regarding software……..

E-72 is actually a step back from e-71.Regret buying the phone. Bluetooth problems,Spacebar issues, Contacts key issues, Email issues, it’s simply astounding to see a phone being released without even a cursory check to see if all the features are present as advertised ( geo tag feature) and if all the features work as promised.
