E71′ keyboard hints!

Oh my.. I was looking for it! As you may know Nokia E51 has special Bluetooth symbol on star (*) key, so it’s easy to find out, it can switch on and off Bluetooth module. Nokia E71 has quite “crowded” keyboard, so it’s not so clearly marked, but you can do the same with long pressing star (* and U) key too! How helpful it is! What else is hidden? Try these:

  • long # pressing switches phone between Normal and Silent mode,
  • long 0 pressing activates web browser, second press leads you to browser’s bookmarks,
  • shift and return (or click navi-button) to mark a single item, like text message,
  • shift and navi-button pressed down to mark multiple items.

Geotagging with locr and E71

As one of our readers (shunzee) posted, you can use 3rd party application called locr to geotag photos taken with Nokia E71. What you need to do first is to register on locr.com. Then download Symbian S60 3rd Edition installer and voila!

After registering your previously created account in mobile application, you can start taking photos by activating locr first. Right after a photo is taken the application asks if you want to add location information to photo’s EXIF file. Of course we do! You can upload geotagged photos to locr online album (100 MB free monthly upload allowed), but you can post photos to flickr, or anywhere else, too!

flickr hint: remember to set in your flickr profile’ page so that EXIF files for uploaded photos were allowed to be imported. Path for this feature is:

Your Account > Privacy & Permissions >Import EXIF location data: Yes

Example geotagged photo on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dexterus/2716859878/

[Update] If you have E71 you can download locr directly to your mobile with Nokia Download! application’s catalog.

E71’ autofocus hint!

Did you know that Nokia E71 has well working autofocus feature? I didn’t! Our blog reader Dawid mailed me about it, so I’m sharing this useful information with you. After activating camera press T key on a keyboard and keep it pressed for few seconds. Camera catches a focus, visible frame will changes into green, and phone beeps. Now press center key and.. done! Sharp, cool photos!

E71? Good, Bad and Ugly, Episode 1

OK, folks! I have been playing with my E71 for more than two weeks, so I think it’s time for first really solid impressions about what is good, bad, and ugly about it. I think it seems sensible to publish this kind of posts regularly, as experience with device will be more detailed. Maybe you would like to prepare your own lists as well?

Good

After using Nokia N80 for almost a year, having two batteries and chargers almost everywhere (home, job, plus USB mobile charger) I really love E71’ battery! The battery lasts for about 3 days of my intensive usage. A friend of mine who bought his device a few days after I got mine, wrote me that his phone works even up to 9 days! Awesome!

Moreover, the device is really well designed. Slim, sexy, definitely one of the best looking Nokia devices available. It reminds me the times when 7110 was as desirable as E71 is now.

Bad

GPS starts in E71 quite slowly and it seems to be less precise, than external Bluetooth using GPS modules. It can be notices particularly when you use application like Nokia Sports Tracker. The important question is if, hopefully, this can be improved by further software changes?

What seems a problem currently, and what let’s hope will improve soon, is the lack of software. E71 allows using some S60 applications written for previous models (like E61i), but some are still not compatible at all. There is no Fring, Yahoo!Go works only in version 2.0, SplashID work is unstable, etc. Maybe this could be a good idea to create Top 10 of useful software for E71?

Ugly

Camera used in E71 is the most disappointing element. What’s wrong with it? Poor quality of pictures taken without direct light from the background. There is no way to save settings, like white balance, which results in too dark pictures. No good flash, and no geo-tagging. At least the camera application is fast.

New Nimbuzz available!

I have just started Nimbuzz on my E71 and it asked me to update its version to new one, marked as 0.9.3. As we still don’t have Fring for Nokia E71 I hope this will be one more useful hint for you!

Solution for Nokia Sports Tracker’ freezing problem

Nokia Sports Tracker won't frezze if it will be kept on this diagram screen

Nokia Sports Tracker won't freeze if you will keep it on this diagram screen

A few last versions of Nokia Sports Tracker for S60 devices (including Nokia E71) are facing problem with application’s freeze, after a few minutes, or kilometers of active tracking. The problem is present no matter, if you are using internal GPS module, or external one, connected via Bluetooth.

It seems that Beta Labs team is familiar with this problem, because a lot of users posted and mailed them with bug reports, but still there is no official fix for this issue. Thankfully on Nokia Discussions Board user ggm02 published a workaround for this issue. How to make it working?

Start Sports Tracker as usual, after it connects to the satellites and starts tracking use navi-key (for example press it twice up) to see a diagram screen. Now you can hide application in a background and it should work fine. The problem with freezing seems to be present only when you keep application working on a main screens where speed and distance are constantly displayed.

Qik on E71? Not really :/

Today I’ve found information that Nokia E71 is present on a list of devices compatible with Qik application. Unfortunately after downloading appropriate .sis file, the installation process was interrupted with error message about invalid certificate. I’ve left post about it on Support Forum but I’m wondering if any of you were able to install Qik on E71? Please leave a message!
